Nermeen Abou Baker hat ihren B.Sc. in Telekommunikationsingenieurwesen am Higher Institute for Applied Science and Technology in Syrien und ihren M.Sc. in Computersicherheit an der University of Liverpool absolviert.
Seit Januar 2020 ist Nermeen als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Informatik im Labor Neuroinformatik unter der Leitung von Professor Dr. Uwe Handmann im Rahmen des Prosperkolleg-Projekts tätig. Seit dem 15. Februar 2024 ist sie weiterhin im Projekt #digital.zirkulär.ruhr, wo sie KMUs beim Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz für das Ressourcenmanagement und die Zielerreichung in der Circular Economy unterstützt.
In ihrer aktuellen Position nutzt Nermeen ihre früheren Forschungserfahrungen, um Aspekte der Digitalisierung bei der Förderung von Nachhaltigkeit im Circular Digital Economy Lab (CDEL) zu untersuchen. Außerdem unterstützt sie bei Hackathons im Rahmen der Zusammenarbeit mit HRW und der Babeș-Bolyai Universität in Cluj.
Nermeens Forschungsinteressen liegen hauptsächlich in den Bereichen Computer Vision und Sensortechnologien, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf der Entwicklung und Implementierung von Abfalltrennungsmechanismen zur Verbesserung von Recyclingsystemen. Ihr Ansatz besteht darin, Transfer-Learning-Methoden zu verwenden, um intelligentere und kosteneffektivere Lösungen zu entwickeln und gleichzeitig den Rechenaufwand für diese zu reduzieren. Diese Forschung trägt dazu bei, die Nachhaltigkeitsziele des Landes NRW im weiteren Sinne zu erreichen.
